January 1994: CableLabs issues RFI seeking input on various aspects of telephony, high-speed data, and "video telephone" services. Shortly thereafter, a meeting was held with 60+ supplier companies, many new to cable. That summer, an RFP is issued for telecom services.

July 1994: CableLabs issues RFP on cable telephony signaling the cable industry's interest in achieving interoperable interactive cable networks.

Early History
January, 1994: CableLabs moves to custom-built, 42,600 square foot building in Louisville, Colo.

1994: CableLabs received its first patent. Subject: A more efficient way of incorporating data into the vertical blanking interval of a television picture.

1994: Revenues grew to about $13 million; full-time staff grows to 50.

Network
1994: CableLabs creates forum for computer industry vendors.

1994: Decision to develop in-house expertise and to keep research and development work in-house, rather than outsourcing to other laboratories and consultants.

1994: CableLabs begins testing HDTV transmission technologies.
